Analysis: Paxton matched a season high with nine Ks and has won consecutive starts, allowing just two hits in each, after losing three of four. ''It's getting closer, just getting more and more comfortable,'' said Paxton, who was 3-0 with a 1.43 ERA in six starts before going on the DL and has gone 4-3 with a 4.74 ERA since returning.

Analysis: Paxton showed absolutely no rust in his first start in nearly a month, keeping the opposition off the scoreboard for the fifth time in his seven outings this season. Though the left-hander remains an injury risk, he may be on the verge of putting together a long-awaited breakthrough season if he can stay healthy.

Analysis: Paxton's scoreless innings streak to begin the year ended at 23 when the A's got on the board in the third. He had allowed just eight hits in his first three starts combined. ''Just didn't have it today,'' said Paxton, who had been 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in three previous starts against Oakland. He'll try to bounce back Wednesday in Detroit, where he's 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three outings.

He hasn't allowed a run yet in three starts this year, and his scoreless stretch is a team record to open a season. He's the 10th pitcher in the majors ever to open a season with three scoreless starts of at least six innings.

He gave up two runs, those coming on a home run by Ian Desmond, and three hits. Paxton went 6-7 with a 3.79 ERA in 20 starts last season, spending almost three weeks on the disabled list with an elbow injury in August.
